A 700x42C bike tyre usually belongs to the 622 mm rim family, but the old 700C label does not tell you the full fit. The detail that matters is the ETRTO marking on the sidewall. A tyre may be marked 42-622, 44-622 or another nearby width, and that small difference can matter for clearance, tube choice and ride feel.
Start with the ETRTO marking
ETRTO writes tyre size as width first, rim diameter second. For example, 42-622 means about 42 mm wide on a 622 mm rim. 44-622 is slightly wider. Both are often discussed in the same 700x42C/700x40C/28x1.60 search area, but they are not a promise that every frame will accept the tyre. Read the old sidewall and check the product page before ordering.
Clearance checks for 40-44 mm 700C tyres
A wider 700C tyre can add comfort and grip, but only if the bicycle has space. Check both sides of the fork, chainstays, seatstays, brake bridge, mudguards, rack mounts and any close cable or hose routing. Leave room for wheel flex, dirt and tyre manufacturing tolerance. If your current tyre is 32C or 35C, do not assume a 42C or 44-622 tyre will fit without measuring.
Road, trekking or light gravel tread?
For road commuting and town use, a smoother tread such as a road-cruiser or touring pattern keeps rolling resistance and noise down. For towpaths, compact gravel and mixed tracks, a more open tread such as a Smart Sam style tyre gives extra bite while staying usable on tarmac. For puncture-protection priority, compare the protection belt, casing and weight rather than only the tread name.
Examples from the 1Bike catalogue
The Schwalbe Smart Sam Performance E-25 700x42C / 44-622 is a mixed-surface option for roads, tracks and light trails. Nearby 42-622 products include Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 700x40C / 42-622, Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tour 700x40C / 42-622 and Schwalbe Road Cruiser 700x40 / 42-622. Availability changes, so use the product page for current stock rather than assuming from a guide.
Tube choice for 700x42C
Choose a tube whose printed range includes the tyre's ETRTO. For many 700x42C tyres, a tube such as Schwalbe SV17 Air Plus 37/47-622/635 or Schwalbe SV18 28/44-622 may cover the size, but valve type and valve length still matter. Match Presta or Schrader to the rim hole and use enough valve length for deep rims.
When to ask for help
If your old tyre only says 700C, 28x1.60 or a worn marking, send the visible sidewall text and a photo of the wheel area before buying. It is safer to confirm ETRTO and clearance than to order by the broad 700C name alone.
