A 22 inch bike tyre is not one single standard. It can mean several rim diameters, including ETRTO 457, 489 and 501. Those numbers are not interchangeable, even when the old inch label looks close.
Start with the ETRTO number
ETRTO writes the tyre as width first and rim diameter second. A tyre marked 47-457 fits a different rim from a 25-489 or 37-501. If the old sidewall is worn, check both sides of the tyre, the tube box if you still have it, and any wheel or wheelchair documentation before ordering.
457: wide 22 inch utility tyres
The Schwalbe Road Cruiser 22x1.75 ETRTO 47-457 is a typical wider 22 inch pneumatic tyre. For this family, a tube such as the Schwalbe DV8B 40/54-457 covers wider 22 inch tyres, and 25-457 rim tape may help if punctures come from spoke holes or rough rim beds.
489: narrow 22x1 and wheelchair fitments
A Schwalbe Right Run 22x1 ETRTO 25-489 and a Schwalbe Marathon Plus wheelchair tyre 22x1 / 25-489 belong to the 489 mm family. They should not be substituted with a 457 tyre simply because both pages mention 22 inch.
501: 22x1 3/8 and solid-tyre options
Some 22 inch searches are really for a 37-501 tyre, such as the Greentyre Classique solid 22x1 3/8 ETRTO 37-501. A solid tyre can be useful where puncture avoidance matters more than ride feel, but it must match the rim and fitting requirements. Tubes such as Schwalbe AV8 or Schwalbe SV8 cover 484/501 ranges, not the wide 457 family.
Before you buy
- Match the second ETRTO number exactly: 457, 489 or 501.
- Check tyre width, fork/frame or wheelchair clearance, and mudguard space.
- Choose a tube range that includes the tyre width and diameter.
- Match valve type to the rim hole: Dunlop, Schrader or Presta.
- For solid tyres, check internal rim width and fitting method before ordering.
If your sidewall says 500A or 600A
Some old-size searches start with a 22 inch label but actually belong to a nearby French-size family. If the sidewall says 500x28A / 28-440, use the 500x28A guide. If it says 600x28A / 28-541, use the 600x28A guide. Those rim diameters are different from 457, 489 and 501.
