Many ordering mistakes happen because 20 inch bike tyres are not one single standard. The two common ETRTO diameters are 406 and 451. A 20x1.75 tyre in 47-406 and a 20x1 3/8 tyre in 37-451 are both called 20 inch, but they fit different rims.
What ETRTO 406 means
ETRTO 406 is the most familiar 20 inch bicycle rim diameter. It is used on many BMX bikes, folding bikes, children's bikes, compact cargo bikes and small e-bikes. Widths vary enormously: 28-406 road-style tyres, 47-406 city tyres, 55-406 balloon tyres, 70-406 wide utility tyres and 100-406 fat bike tyres are all in the same rim-diameter family.
What ETRTO 451 means
ETRTO 451 is a larger 20 inch rim diameter. It appears on some fast folders, BMX race wheels, recumbents, mobility wheels and older or specialist small-wheel bikes. A tyre marked 37-451, 28-451 or 25-451 will not fit a 406 rim even though the marketing label still says 20 inch.
Why the tyre will not stretch to fit
The bead seat diameter is structural. A 451 tyre is too large for a 406 rim, and a 406 tyre is too small for a 451 rim. Forcing either combination can damage the tyre or prevent safe seating. Always read the old sidewall and buy the same second ETRTO number.
Tubes: more flexible, but still size-bound
Inner tubes can cover a range of widths and sometimes several nearby diameters, but they still need to match the tyre and valve. A tube marked 25/37-451 is for narrow 451 tyres. A tube marked 40/62-406 is for wider 406 tyres. Do not use tube flexibility as permission to fit the wrong tyre diameter.
406 and 451 examples from 1Bike
In 406, 1Bike lists tyres such as Schwalbe Big Apple 20x2.00, Marathon Plus 20x1.75 and many BMX or utility patterns. In 451, examples include Impac IS101 20x1 3/8, Schwalbe Mow Joe 37-451, Greentyre Traveller solid tyres and narrow race-style options. These product pages show the ETRTO so you can compare like with like.
Solid tyres and rim-width traps
Solid 20 inch tyres can be useful for puncture-prone utility or mobility use, but they often specify internal rim-width ranges. For example, a 37-451 solid tyre may require a narrow rim range. Check both the ETRTO and the rim-width note before choosing a solid replacement.

Use the 20 inch category as a starting point, then filter mentally by ETRTO. Match the old tyre's second number first, then choose the width, tread, tube and valve that suit the bicycle.
